well i know a few sites where you can get nice images like
    1. www.creatas.com
    2. www.corbis.com (good one)
    3. www.gettyimages.com (another good one).

apart from these there is veer, alamy etc
they all are good. few are free and few needs money for reg and if you dnt then you have to deal with the water mark. corbis is real good. i use d the images from corbis on my site http://pixel007.ifastnet.com

This is similar to my project ImageTrail, it indexes multiple microstock agencies (the cheap ones like iStockPhoto, Dreamstime, Fotolia, etc). It allow people to license and price shop. We have tried to make it simple, like Google images, but the results are actually legal to use (once a license is purchased from the agencies).

You should make sure to read the license whenever you acquire a stock image. Most things are allowable, but some have "weirdnesses" that they don't allow (some allow templates, some don't).

I would also agree that both free and "Google" images are dangerous. The only free site I trust is sxc.hu because as a submitter I know that they actually look at the images they accept. They also have a model release ability. Don't use pictures of people without a model release! Even if you are half way around the world from the model, you can get sued.

Search Google. Then for better storage, use free image hosting of Photobucket Pro.

Someone else may have mentioned this already, but StockXChange - sxc.hu - It's hit or miss but you get some decent ones from time to time, and hey it's free. If you looking for paid, which will obviously be the best, do Getty (www.gettyone.com) or Corbis (www.corbis.com)

I use iStockPhoto too, I think they have good quality of photos at very reasonable price, if it's just for web, usually cost about 1 dollar.

Otherwise, Microsoft Office sometime has good images too.

Where to get photos for web design?

    Hi there,

I am not sure if anyone else has mentioned this site or not but I use this one all the time and it is great! I think it is called Stockxchange . You need an account, you don't have to pay but I think it is a sharing based program whereas you would upload photos for other people to use, but between you and I, I've never uploaded a photo.

It's the best so far that I have seen anyway.

    I second istockphoto.com

There is a good selection and they are low cost - a few dollars for each photo depending on the resolution you want to download.

Well, as for me, i try to get simple images by shooting them myself, but if i need a more complex photo, i.e. illustrating a concept of some kind or a picture of an exotic place in the world, i try to download it / buy it..

As free site, sxc.hu is not bad, but not really impressive variety.

From time to time i download images from free sections of microstock sites..

    Here are my favorite ones:

Istock - seems to be the most powerful one to me but not the cheapest.

Dreamstime - has nice exclusive photo sales (see the "sell the rights" licensing mode).

Shutterstock - has a good subscription system. But really, i use it if i need large amounts of cheap photos for a big project or for many simultaneous projects. Per-photo sales are present, but not as cheap as on other sites. Probably, i'll buy a subscription there soon just to get a collection of conceptual photos which are used most of the time.

Bigstock - generally i use it to sell photos, but sometimes find some useful graphics.

Fotolia - seems to me a bit different from other stock sites with a nice collection. Though, maybe not a very friendly search system, but i think, they'll fix it soon.

Stockxpert - is much like sxc.hu, but not free. Seems to work on the same web engine.

Albumo - is a new one, probably have to wait some time until it's filled with stuff.

Additionally, i find the pay sites useful when i need photos of people - i do not have to bother with model releases and permissions of any kind..

I've created a page with all design content sources i know.

    List of photo/vectors/video websites

Not really strong as design, i'll better work on its database.
    Will add more links soon.

    Free stock images

I have always found good free images at the stock exchange:

    http://www.sxc.hu/

You will need to register for a free account.

    I hope this helps!
