News feeds sources/implementation questions

Hello,

I am trying to get a grasp on how I can incorporate news feeds (like AP news, through RSS feeds) into my site without using someone else's widget.

I would actually like to be able to parse out headlines and then categorize the news link separately on the site, not all together in a scrolling or top-down approach.

Can anyone point me to some direct news sources and/or tell me what type of scripting I should be looking at/learning to do this? Is that too general?
