newfangled

I'm looking to build a website which I will describe as a reference site. The basic premise is that all content will be categorized and sub-categorized. For instance a post on the topic of a particular game might be navigable by going to the main category "Computers", then a sub-category of "Gaming", then "RPG". The important thing here is that I wouldn't categorize the site as a blog but more of a Wikipedia like reference site but not quite as minimalistic.
I'm looking for ideas on the best way to layout the content for ease of management. Would using Wordpress with a static landing page be appropriate? Any other CMS which would better fit the bill?
I'm kinda new to all this so any suggestions are appreciated. If anyone knows of any Wordpress plug-ins which would facilitate a site like I described I'd appreciate those suggestions as well.
Thanks.
