Looking for help with mash up content

I have an idea for a project that will pull in specific (but random) google content and form a mashup of somewhat random information. I want the user to be able to change the settings for color and for mood.

I know that google can find images based on color, and that's where color comes into play... and i want the images/ text to reflect the mood.

Here is a link to a mashup that gave me the idea. I'd like the images to do something similar to this. Can anyone help me or steer me in the right direction of what type of code I need to use or how to get started with this??
