drupal or php and mysql

hello,

I am new to web development, I am experienced with drupal and have basic knowledge of php and mysql. I am making a site for a friends business. He rents out cars with drivers to oil company to go to the dessert and back. I want to design an application to allow him to keep track of his trips. Because his system is horrible and hes losing thousands of dollars because of it.

So my idea is to design a agenda where the oil company must log onto the site and place a check mark on the day they want the trip to leave so we can contact the driver and keep track of the trips.

I thought that drupal is an overkill and might be to much of a hassle. I was wondering if anyone could help me out.

Drupal is a content management system. What you're describing is a php application that needs to be developed to suit your client's needs. Unless drupal has an add on for "desert truck logging" you'll need to develop this piece separately and use drupal perhaps for the front end management.
