offset colors in table rows

I am trying to have a list of rows from a table offset back and forth from white to a gray background. For instance I want odd rows to be white and even rows to be gray. Is there a function to find remainders of an equation in an if statement? I know there is a Mod function in SQL for finding remainders but I am trying to find a different way without writing up another query. Any ideas on how to achieve my long term goal?
