Authentication, Authorization, and Access Control

Hi guys, I'm somewhat of a newbie to webdesign, I've only really been working with the easy/visual stuff so far and as my websites get more complicated I find myself demanding the ability to add more features,

one essential feature I need to add is a user login feature that will give access to certain web pages restricted to only those with a preset username and password

My domain host has MySQL installed,

Would anyone please walk me through how to do this, or direct me to where I can read more about adding such a feature?

Any links to opensource software that will be easy to work with would be appreciated
