Freelance Marketing Advice

I'm a freelance designer. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice or resources when it comes to marketing strategies. I'm a great designer - but I'm learning the business side as I go.

FYI - I'm not interested in the freelance websites our there like guru.com. Auctions always work against the bidders - the freelancers in this case.

Promotion....Business cards, good portfolio, word of mouth seems to work well for me.

"hey i heard you did this web site for bla bla...I need a web site too"

Of course, the only way that happens is if you have a happy customer in the end...so that's a must..keeping your clients happy so they can brag about their kick @$$ web site designed by you.

what's your methods now?
