php file uploading

i feel ashamed posting this as i found this

and yet im still confused.

i changed
__URL__
to the other file
and
$uploaddir = '/var/www/uploads/';

to a directory i created
which was /uploads/

and i get the negative every time.
is there any simple direct way to do this, even if its not secure. Im just very confused at the moment.
