Whats the best ? Tell me

I am designing a website actually and i dont know what kind of HTML i should use. May be i dont explain myself clear but i have the choice between those elements :

Having an html page in :

XHTML 1.0 Transitionnal ?
HTML 4.01 Transitionnal ?

Whats the best and how they are used and for what purpose ! Does any are for pictures and others only for text. I'm in a **** storm of fog.

I always use XHTML strict.

XHTML is a newer 'technology' that was designed to replace html... though it's very similar to html 4.01 - but is generally considered stricter and cleaner.
