I am looking for photos to add to new websites I am designing. I am against taking someone else photos and using them for my self. So where can I get some for free use or a small royalty fee?

I am guessing you mean free stock photos and not animattions and stuff. If you do a search on google for "free stock photos" you will find some places that will let you use them. Just be careful about reading the Conditions of Use. If you go to http://www.deviantart.com they also have a stock photo section.

I have a search, so many conditions. I need to use them on clients websites. On most places are vary poor on there layout of the photos, spend hours going through each page, and nothing good. Some on needs a one stop place.

FInding photos of Computer Servers is a pain in the ---. I have never spent so much time looking for on e spcific picture. All these photo sites are a joke, hugh database, with not one good picture of a server. It takes time to go through 600 pictures on each site. When you come across something it is $50 and up to use a picture. For this money and time looking, I could have taken a picture myself and edit it in photoshop. That is what I will do. I do not know who would pay such money for the photos. wow good to get that off my chest. lol :)

I found an awsome resource for images that has come in handy on many an occasion: www.istockphoto.com
It's free to sign up, but you pay per download with download credits. You can buy packages of credits in $10, $20, $50, and $100 amounts. $100 is the best value if you have a lot of future projects: you get 250 downloads for $100!

Some great places are
istockphotos.com
gettyimages (not sure of URL, possibly gettyimages.com)
You can find a lot of great galleries on google, or, many web designers have portfolios of photography for sale.

I know quite a few designers that use images from mags, books, whatever, scan them and change them a bit, or whatever. I would probably not recommend getting into a habit about this, but sometimes it can help when you are in a pinch. Very tricky subject this though... copyright and what to use/not to use.
Just be careful with that...
www.digitalvision.com has a wicked collection. Full of broadcast motion graphics, vector graphics, animations, music, photography... If you jump on their site you can have them send you a free catalog full of samples (I would recommend getting one, it is good for generating ideas if nothing else) Go check them. I don't know what their prices are like, but I think you can buy individual images from them for not too much.

Try www.dreamstime.com , they're new but have some great stuff in there. The price is only $1 and the resolution is flawless. I use them for all my web or DTP work.
I used getty before but they are really expensive.

I just found a great new site from coolhomepages, it's called www.bigstockphoto.com. I really liked the beautiful photos--they are dirt cheap - about a $1-2. I really like that I can use the photos on my templates--one feature istock doesn't have.

Best resource I have found so far for absolutely FREE photos for websites (commercial and non commercial use) is www.morguefile.com it's well organized and tons of photos, all the people ask in return is that you to let them know where you use their photos so they can see how they are being used!! I even have some photos there (GoodKarma is the username)... but please please please take the second required to send the photographer a note to let them know where you have used their pics...

I've used photos.com and if you are getting work it's a good deal. But the selection is pretty lousy so it helps to be good at PShop image manipulation. Most of the time I use multiple photos to make a single image - which is why photos.com is good since they have an unlimited subscription for the year.
Also, charge your clients.

Basically I would stay away from "free" images. They usually aren't worthwhile at all. There are places however that you can get cheap photos like this place:
http://www.bigstockphoto.com less than $2.50 for individual downloads and if you buy a bunch of credits at once it just gets cheaper. Seriously... spend the $2.50 to get a quality image instead of some cheap thing.

A great source of items for web design is:
http://www.blemeshack.com/
They have a Search Engine that lets you search other sites for graphics, images, Video, Flash, Sounds, etc. It's more of a meta search engine site than a particular database - because they index other sites.
There is also a tool to let you store the code to images and graphics you find, to create a personal collection.

Google images are pulled from web pages and you should assume that they are all copyrighted.
----
A note to Nathan (spiderindia)--I got your spam email today:
"...I went through your website , its looking quite old and outdated ... would like to update your website with some additional features like online sales..."
Pretty rude to send to a professional web development company, especially since you obviously didn't visit the website in question as there is nothing there to sell so adding online sales would be pretty pointless, wouldn't it?

iStockphoto's collection is massive. I have been trying to get my pics uploaded for the past year, but no luck. They seem to be quite fussy on the quality of images to be uploaded. Are all stock photo sites like this? They have denied my 'maximum quality' jpg and raw image files, all according to their size specs, and said it 'is not up to standard' ... or something like that. I dont understand. I assume it all depends on the technology of your digi camera (more than 5 mega pixels)
On the other hand, I'm glad iStockPhoto is now providing resources for flash designers.
Must go check them other sites out.
Thanks gnubler.

"Standards" is both technical and artistic standards. If they aren't accepting yoou photos and they meet the technical requirements, then the picture itself doesn't fit the sort of images they are looking for.

Well, I don't think anyon mentioned this one yet - the mother of a all stock photo searches - http://www.creativepro.com/eservices/imagegrabber - it has a meta search of multiple photo sources, including Getty and many others. Very handy.
This is similar to my project ImageTrail (http://www.imagetrail.net), it indexes multiple microstock agencies (the cheap ones like iStockPhoto, Dreamstime, Fotolia, etc). It allow people to license and price shop. We have tried to make it simple, like Google images, but the results are actually legal to use (once a license is purchased from the agencies).
You should make sure to read the license whenever you acquire a stock image. Most things are allowable, but some have "weirdnesses" that they don't allow (some allow templates, some don't).
I would also agree that both free and "Google" images are dangerous. The only free site I trust is sxc.hu because as a submitter I know that they actually look at the images they accept. They also have a model release ability. Don't use pictures of people without a model release! Even if you are half way around the world from the model, you can get sued.

Hi there,
I am not sure if anyone else has mentioned this site or not but I use this one all the time and it is great! I think it is called Stockxchange (http://www.sxc.hu) . You need an account, you don't have to pay but I think it is a sharing based program whereas you would upload photos for other people to use, but between you and I, I've never uploaded a photo.
It's the best so far that I have seen anyway.

Well, as for me, i try to get simple images by shooting them myself, but if i need a more complex photo, i.e. illustrating a concept of some kind or a picture of an exotic place in the world, i try to download it / buy it..
As free site, sxc.hu (http://scx.hu) is not bad, but not really impressive variety.
From time to time i download images from free sections of microstock sites..
Here are my favorite ones:
Istock (http://istockphoto.com) - seems to be the most powerful one to me but not the cheapest.
Dreamstime (http://www.dreamstime.com/res59697) - has nice exclusive photo sales (see the "sell the rights" licensing mode).
Shutterstock (http://www.shutterstock.com/?rid=54872) - has a good subscription system. But really, i use it if i need large amounts of cheap photos for a big project or for many simultaneous projects. Per-photo sales are present, but not as cheap as on other sites. Probably, i'll buy a subscription there soon just to get a collection of conceptual photos which are used most of the time.
Bigstock (http://www.bigstockphoto.com/?refid=VdFbcmn2Hm) - generally i use it to sell photos, but sometimes find some useful graphics.
Fotolia (http://fotolia.com/partner/6564) - seems to me a bit different from other stock sites with a nice collection. Though, maybe not a very friendly search system, but i think, they'll fix it soon.
Stockxpert (http://stockxpert.com) - is much like sxc.hu, but not free. Seems to work on the same web engine.
Albumo (http://www.albumo.com/affiliate-referral/507/home) - is a new one, probably have to wait some time until it's filled with stuff.
Additionally, i find the pay sites useful when i need photos of people - i do not have to bother with model releases and permissions of any kind..

1.
Carry camera along with you, whenever like you can click picture. You can use that for your website. Isn't it great idea??
2.
Search images online, i am not saying simply use it, if you like image you can edit in smart way( but avoid other's logo ).
Also, when you thinking to use image from other site then it will be good to check the copyright details.
You can google to find sites with collections of image or try flickr or stumbleupon.

This would breach the copy right of the image owner and get you in a load of trouble. This is the last thing any reputable web designer/developer would ever do.
Instead you should looking to stock photography sites. Firstly free ones like sxc.hu are a nice place to start.
If you can't find what you are looking for then pay. I personally use http://en.fotolia.com/. Its reasonably priced and to be honest, a few dollars for THE photo is a great investment.
If you do use google images then you should ask the photo owners permission before you use it.

well watch their video, it shows that they can. They've invented a technology, it's probably based off of the same technology that can do face recognition. Makawak
28 Aug 2009, 12:23 PM
Actually Lab, if the jpeg photo was encoded with anything, then the data would carry on regards of how much you altered it and changed its file format. AI could be used to track this but other means can be used to. The science behind facial recognition is very impressive, and not easy to trick.
Lab860
29 Aug 2009, 09:16 AM
dude you have alot to learn? Dude I wrote my first dos program in 6th grade in 1987 and won an award for it, I write t-SQL and code in asp and php, fluently. I graduated in 1995 and have over 13 years experience in the real world of c++ .net and vb and c# programming for major companies here in the northeast, so... you may have alot to learn from me my friend.
All I'm saying is I don't see how this is possible, if I create a new JPG and copied a pic into it and heavily modified it, how can this be traceable? I'll admit not the guru in graphics as I am in development. But face recognition is a completely different beast, we're talking about encoding in a file. I'll research this on the web, if someone can explain exactly how this is possible other than "technology is there" please feel free.

I totally agree. I hate all the licensing. you can't just google and take whatever picture you find suit. most of them are licensed pictures. I STICK with sources which I'm sure offer free to use photos.
Actually I'm learning photography myself, it is pretty handy in many situations in which finding a proper photo is either quite time consuming or expensive.

best option is to grab some photos from istckphoto and professionally redesign and add to as needed

I am guessing you mean free stock photos and not animattions and stuff. If you do a search on google for "free stock photos" you will find some places that will let you use them. Just be careful about reading the Conditions of Use. If you go to all inclusive vacations (http://bookit.com/travel-ideas/all-inclusive/vacations/) they also have a stock photo section.

What an awesome site for art. Thanks a bunch for the share.

The best place I found is www.image-reseller.com
They have a 25 free pack to see what they are like
plus you can download the thumbnails too.
Great photos at a resonable price. Plus they come
with resale rights and/or private label right.
I like it because they are very flexible with their
photos.

We use istockphoto.com. Their photos are good and very reasonable. For web resolution, you won't spend more than $3 or $4 on a single image.

If you really want some good images and pics for your website design (http://www.arttechstudio.com/). Flickr.com i think would be the best. I signed up and some emails were passed to me with some good quality images depending on your preference.

Photographs are a great way to dress up a website. They add color and liveliness to pages and are just fun. But unless you're a professional stock photographer, chances are you don't have a lot of photos of anything except your family, friends, vacations, and pets. But don't despair, there are lots of ways to get photos for Web pages.Flickr and Other Online Photo Sharing Sites

Just be sure to ask for permission. I had a large t-shirt company (Ouray Sportswear) steal one of my images and make a t-shirt from it. The only way I knew was, I happened to be in a t-shirt shop in Tombstone Arizona and I saw a shirt with my image on it!! I talked to the vice president and he told me that the designer must have gotten the image from google images. I had to contact a lawyer.

I am looking for photos to add to new websites I am designing. I am against taking someone else photos and using them for my self. So where can I get some for free use or a small royalty fee?
I think you should purchase from the paid site, because when you purchase photos for your own site it will be your property and you can claim for copy right if any one try to use these photos without your permission.

I've gotten a lot of great free images from sxc.hu
http://www.dreamstime.com is a paid site, but they have a good free section.
http://www.morguefile.com has a large collection of free quality images.
If asking permission is not something you're afraid of, Flickr.com is probably the largest collection on the web. There are quite a few shutterbugs there that will let you use their work. They've got something akin to a PM system where you can contact most of them, and you can shoutbox the rest. Once you have the OK to use their image, just save the email or PM as verification.

After gaining the Flip in Christmas, you are glad to find a traditional but amazing shooting tool which is easy-to-take and non-expensive spending, everything from it is as good ad HD camcorders and now you hope to edit the Flip recording on iMovie if you are Mac users.
The fact seems to break the compatibility logic. Clips form Flip SlideHD, Flip Mino HD , Flip Mino HD, Flip Ultra, Flip Ultra HD are in MP4 format, while shooting form Flip Mino is in MPEG-4 AVI format. iMovie limits its accepted video to MOV, MP4, H.264, M4V etc format. That is, iMovie can support most of the MP4 records from Flip camcorder in logic.
The problem occurs may due to the differences between Flip MP4 and iMovie readable MP4. The gap between Flip MP4 and iMovie make Flip shooting fans feel frustrated when make effort to edit Flip video with iMovie,
If they have a Mac Flip to iMovie Converter (http://www.doremisoft.net/Video-Converter-Mac/)installed on Mac, everything will be fine. Doremisoft In. Researched and develped Mac Flip to iMovie Converter for Flip camcorder users to fully enjoy editing and creating their family movie.

I was introduced to istockphoto and I like them because they let you choose how to buy you photos/art. For example if you go to getty or use Adobe's tool to network with a whole bunch of sites, then you see once you purchase them, you will pay between $50 and $250 (sometimes more or less) to use them.
