Ticket Sales

Hi I am pretty new to web designing and I have a few questions.

Our theatre department at our school wants to be able to sell tickets online and then people can pick them up at will call.

I talked to this one guy I know who knows webdesign and has created one that he wrote a custom program using coldfusion and MySQL.

Here are my quesitons:

1. Does anyone know where I can find information explaing how this works?

2. Any recommendations?

We don't have the budget to do a mass box office revamp that would be required with some businesses that sell ticket sales software/hardware.

To sell online you need a payment gateway and a shopping cart that can interface with it. A payment gateway would be something like Paypal or WorldPay.

Your website would be coded so that people fill in their details on your website then they are transferred to the payment gateway to enter their payment details.

If your tickets would only be sold to people in the local area I would recommend using a reservation system where people can reserve tickets or seats and pay when they pick them up instead of making people pay for tickets online.

The coding would be easier and therefore cheaper.
